Montrose has named Brett Mertens its new football coach, according to Matt Meyer of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

He replaces Jim Scarry, who resigned this week but will remain as an assistant coach, according to the Sentinel.

Mertens, the offensive coordinator at Montrose last season, was previously a head coach in California for three seasons. He was 16-18 leading Crean Lutheran from 2013-15, including a 9-4 record his final season — the best record in program history, according to the Orange County Register.

Mertens was an assistant at Crean Lutheran for four seasons prior to becoming head coach, according to the newspaper.

Scarry was 11-9 in two seasons as head coach at Montrose. He took over when Todd Casebier took the job at Fruita Monument.

Montrose finished 5-5 in Class 4A this season, and won its final three games. The Indians missed the playoffs.

Under Mertens, Montrose finished 10th in the state regardless of classification with 3,095 rushing yards. That figure ranked fourth among 4A teams.
