GREENWOOD VILLAGE — Cherry Creek soccer is off to a very solid start to the year.

The Bruins are ranked at No. 5 in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings and have wins over Mountain Vista, Hinkley and Aurora Central. With a team that returned very few players, the Bruins are proving to be a bit of a surprise contender.

With a team returning six of the 19 varsity players, the Bruins have to be playing more as a team considering there is very little experience they’re performing well against some high quality programs.

That qualities the Bruins emphasize most are confidence and chemistry. Many of the players on this team have known each other for a long time and have become very close friends. This, of course, translates to the pitch where they are building off each other and playing at a high level.

“We have been working very hard in practice and have come together very well over the past couple of weeks,” senior defenseman Pepe Balbona said. “There are only a few returning players but I think we are already forming strong chemistry playing together.”

It’s no secret that that is the key to success for Creek.

“We have a great team,” Balbona continued to say. “We will just continue to focus on the next game and work hard in practice to improve what we have already done.”

This team is geared up and ready to compete in a very strong Centennial League, but if all things continue, Cherry Creek may be a team to keep an eye on come October when playoffs begin.
