Cherry Creek didn’t have to look far to find its successor to Mike Brookhart.

The Bruins hired Kent Dertinger, the former junior varsity coach, as the new head coach of the boys basketball team.

The hire was first reported by the Union Street Journal and has been confirmed by CHSAANow.com.

As well as coaching basketball at Cherry Creek, Dertinger is also a math teacher at the school. He is also a graduate from Cherry Creek.

“We think Kent has the right makeup to put our program where it needs to be,” athletic director Jason Wilkins said. “The kids all rave about him as a teacher and as a coach. He’s going to put in the time and he’s going to put in the effort.”

The Bruins went 16-10 in Brookhart’s final season and advanced to the Class 5A Great 8 where they were beaten by Chatfield. He had been the Bruins’ head coach since 2002.

Wilkins noted that in his time as athletic director at Cherry Creek, he received more coaching applications for this boys basketball coaching search than he has for any other coaching position available at the school.
