Cheyenne Mountain senior Javonte Johnson scored 50 points in his team’s win over Discovery Canyon on Wednesday, becoming the first player to hit the 50-point mark this season.
Johnson, who broke the school’s career scoring record earlier this month, leads the state in scoring across all classifications at 28.7 points per game. He is one of just a handful of players to score more than 40 points in a game this season.
Against Discovery Canyon for his top-ranked Class 4A squad, Johnson was 16-of-25 from the field, including 4-of-13 from 3-point, and a perfect 12-for-12 for two. He also hit 14-of-18 free throws. Cheyenne Mountain won, 78-66.
Johnson scored nine points in the first quarter and 12 in the second as he amassed 21 first-half points. He turned it up in the second half, scoring 14 in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth — totaling 29.
Johnson’s previous season-high output was 36 points, which he hit against Fountain-Fort Carson on Dec. 5, and against Coronado on Jan. 9. His previous career high was 40 points, against Widefield as a junior.
Johnson has signed to play basketball at New Mexico next season.
