Sangre de Cristo football ends a 16-game losing streak

Sangre de Cristo football stopped a 16-game losing streak on Saturday with a come-from-behind win over Las Animas.

The Thunderbirds, who trailed 14-0 after the first quarter, rallied to beat the Trojans 42-26 thanks to a 20-0 advantage in the second quarter, as well as a strong second half.

It was the first win since Sept. 9, 2017. Sangre de Cristo lost its final six games of the 2017 season, finished 0-9 last season, and fell to Soroco to open this season.

On Saturday, Sangre threw three passing touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 20-14 at the half.

Las Animas tied the game at 20 in the third quarter, before Sangre went ahead with a rushing score with five minutes to play in the frame.

The, up 28-26 in the fourth, Sangre added another rushing score to push its lead to 34-26, and then sealed the win with a fumble return for a score in the final minute.

The Thunderbirds, who play in 8-man, host Sanford next Saturday.
