Beginning on Friday, teams from all corners of the state will all meet up at the Denver Coliseum for glory and hardware.
In Class 5A , multiple teams are eyeing the trophy and looking to take it home and the Cherry Creek Bruins are no exception. After dominating Region 11, the Bruins are looking to put another stamp this weekends tournament.
The Bruins (21-4 overall) are the No. 10 overall seed in 5A and will compete in pool play alongside No. 3 Fairview and No. 6 Mountain Vista.
This pool is loaded with talent from top to bottom. The Knights (21-4) are hungry after last year’s three-set loss to Cherokee Trail in the title game. Mountain Vista (20-5)comes into the weekend with the worst seeding at No. 6, still making them a tough challenge in the early stages of the tournament.
The only head-to-head matchup in this pool came in the season opener between Cherry Creek and Mountain Vista. Both teams have come a long way since the five-set thriller to open the year and all three teams are going to have to be on their game to advance out of this pool.
“After our tough loss to Vista at the beginning of the year, we have improved and are excited for the rematch,” sophomore hitter Katie Sherman said. “This team is capable of doing great things at state and I think everyone is motivated to prove to others how talented we truly are.”
The Bruins also know that they are the underdogs and are going to have to claw their way if they want to advance to the semifinals.
“Every team at state will be tough, but it’s all about who brings their A-game at the right time,” Sherman said. “I think our team is more than capable of pulling out of this pool on top.”
This weekend will shape up to be a good one. A total of 60 teams will show up with five walking out as state champions. Catch all of this weekends action live on the NFHS Network.
