Eaglecrest junior Colbey Ross was named the state’s boys basketball player of the year by Gatorade on Thursday morning.

Ross led the Raptors to a runner-up finish in Class 5A last weekend, averaging 18.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.6 blocks per game last season.

He also carries a 3.47 GPA.

“Colbey Ross is an incredible athlete and competitor,” Arapahoe coach Brad Jansen said in a statement. “His leadership skills and maturity have grown over the last three seasons as well. I have seen a talented freshman develop into an outstanding leader, competitor and respectful young man.”

Ross now becomes a finalist for the national player of the year award, which will be announced later this month.

He is the first Eaglecrest boys basketball player to be honored with the state award.

Denver East’s Brian Carey won the award last season.
