LONGMONT — When No. 2 Longmont’s senior starting quarterback went down with an injury on the first drive of the game against a tough opponent in No. 3 Windsor, it would’ve been easy to worry.

When the kid who trotted out to lead the team on the next drive was a freshman, it would’ve been hard not to.

But the Trojans’ tough defense stepped up and only allowed seven points all game, setting their offense up with a chance to win the game with under two minutes to play.

Freshman quarterback Oakley Dehning, who threw two interceptions, came up clutch, hitting Eli Sullivan for a 45-yard touchdown with seconds to go, bringing the Trojans to within one. That’s when coach Doug Johnson didn’t hesitate to go for the win, and Conlan Berger ran the ball around the edge to waltz into the endzone for the conversion and an 8-7 win.

Windsor, led by quarterback Brad Peeples and its option attack, did enough to get the win, but couldn’t hold on at the end. Peeples threw for Windsor’s only touchdown of the game. Windsor’s defense dominated Longmont, especially after the opening drive, but just couldn’t muster enough points to win.

Longmont stays undefeated, now at 7-0 (2-0 Longs Peak) this season. Windsor suffers its first loss, dropping to 6-1 (1-1).
