
Don Miller.
CHSAA Hall of Fame member and longtime football, wrestling and track coach at Glenwood Springs High School Don Miller passed away Sunday after a long illness.
Miller coached at GSHS for 31 years and was the school’s athletic director on two different occasions (1976-79, 1995-99). He was 79.
Affectionately known as “Coach” throughout his career, Miller compiled a 204-174-4 record, winning state titles in 1978 and 1980. He was just the fifth coach in state history to win 200 games. “Coach” was selected the Colorado Football Coach of the year twice and was selected to coach in the annual All-State Game on two occasions.
His Demon track and field teams won a number of district championships and finished runner-up in the state twice. He was the Colorado Track and Field Coach of the Year three times.
Miller was active in a number of professional organizations, especially the Colorado Athletic Directors Association (CADA) and the Colorado High School Coaches Association (CHSCA). He served on the CADA Board of Directors.
Miller’s work with the CHSCA was extensive. A 1977 inductee to the CHSCA Hall of Fame, he was the recipient of the several service awards from the Association, including the Don DesCombes Distinguished Service Award and, Ed Lesar Award (twice). He is a member of the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame (2003), Western State College Hall of Fame (2003), CHSAA Hall of Fame (2009) and Glenwood Springs Community Hall of Fame (1998).
Miller started his coaching career at Burlington High School, assisting in baseball and basketball in 1961-62. He then went on to Wiggins High School where he was assistant baseball and head football coach from 1962-64. He then went on to Glenwood Springs where he finished his career, coaching football and track for 31 years and wrestling for six.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the football field in Glenwood Springs.
